Melissa,
There are several reasons you may see this error. Check the following:

1. Check the presence of the following program files in your computer:

o Ontrack Fix-It Utilities or Ontrack SystemSuite - This program has an anti-virus program that uses the same scan engine as Trend Micro products. Uninstall this product to help resolve the issue.

o Ad-aware (Lavasoft) - This program has a feature that blocks copying PC-cillin update files. Uninstall this product to help resolve the issue.

o OSSPROXY.EXE or MarketScore - This 3rd-party proxy is considered as a spyware that might have been installed on your system without your knowledge. Uninstall this product to help resolve the issue. For removal instructions, refer to the Spy Sweeper site.

o XFire - The XFire program is an Instant Messenger tool PC gamers. This issue occurs when XFire overrides the default TCP/IP settings of Windows, thus preventing PC-cillin from performing the update. Disable or uninstall this product to help resolve the issue.

2. Check the Proxy Settings.

Some Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use proxy servers to connect to the Internet. Make sure that the proxy information in PC-cillin Antivirus program reflects the settings of your ISP.

If the ISP is using a proxy, configure PC-cillin Antivirus to use the proxy address:

. Open PC-cillin Antivirus.
. Select Update > Update Setting.
. Under Proxy Information, click Proxy Settings.
. Type the proxy address and port specified by your ISP.
. Click OK.

Note: When users attempt to configure the proxy settings, some ISPs require a username and password. Enter these information in the specified fields.

. If your ISP is not using a proxy, make sure that the Use a proxy server to connect to Internet option or checkbox is cleared.
. Once the PC-cillin Antivirus proxy information has been configured correctly, try updating again.

3. Check the Internet Connection.

An Internet connection is necessary to update the PC-cillin program.
. Make sure that the computer is still connected to the Internet.
. Disconnect from and reconnect to the Internet.
. Try updating again.

4. Check 3rd-party firewall applications.

Some users may have another firewall program installed on the computer. In some cases, the third-party firewall blocks PC-cillin Antivirus access to the Internet. Thus, causing an error in the update function.

Make sure that PC-cillin Antivirus is given permission to access the Internet.

"Make sure that PC-cillin Antivirus is given permission to access the Internet. "

I think that's the most critical point.. obviously something is blocking access...
